Setsubun, which is the scattering of soy beans out from the entrance hall or windows of a home, was originally part of the annual New Year's Eve celebration at the Royal Court called Tsuina.
In Tsuina, noblemen would run after people dressed as devils with bows and arrows. The first record of Setsubun appeared (was written) in a book in 1425.
